UConn Women’s Basketball… Greatest team ever?

uconn womens basketball wins its 100th conescutive game

As sports fans, we are used to seeing individuals like Tiger Woods, Michael Phelps, and Serena Williams have great levels of success in individual sports. But rarely have we seen that level of dominance in team sports, until now.

Ladies and Gentlemen let me introduce to you the UConn Women’s basketball team… the greatest team in college sports history!

A streak started on November 23, 2014 — a win over Creighton 96-60 — hit the century mark as the UConn Lady Huskies defeated South Carolina 66-55 to win its 100th consecutive game. Led by head coach Geno Auriemma, the Lady Huskies are the blueprint of excellence in women’s sports as they continue to dominate the game of basketball. The win over South Carolina did not come in typical blowout fashion for the Lady Huskies —  56  of its wins have come by at least 40 points during the streak — but the game was never in doubt despite the team being outscored 16-15 in the fourth quarter.

Some will say women’s college basketball is a matter of the haves vs. have-nots when it comes to talent and skill set being dispersed equally amongst the teams but not only has Connecticut faced its share of top-tiered teams — 11 of its 25 wins have come against ranked opponents. And it’s been done without hogging all of the talent — only one of its three recruits from the class of 2016, point guard Crystal Dangerfield, was ranked in the Top 100 according to ESPN.

Three of the final four regular-season games are against teams with winning records — including the finale on the road against No. 22 ranked South Florida. Looking at the margin of victory in previous wins over Tulane (+44), Temple (+28) and USF (+65) it is safe to assume that the quest to finish the 2016-17 regular season undefeated is pretty much a sure thing.

Continuing the win streak in the regular season is nice for Auriemma and the program but the ultimate goal is to end the 2016-17 season by hanging another championship banner in the XL Center and cutting down the nets at the American Airlines Center here in Dallas. If this happens it will be the fifth consecutive championship — 12th all-time — for the program and it would firmly place them at the top of the list of the best sports program ever.
