At the beginning of the 2015 MHSAA Football season, Detroit Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School was Ranked #1 in the State. On Friday, with no time left on the clock, King (14-0) snatched victory out of the hands of the Lowell High School Red Arrows (12-2) 40-38. The victory at Ford Field signified that the Crusaders had fulfilled their destiny and were crowned the Division 2 State Champions.
The Red Arrows didn’t make it easy for the Crusaders. Lowell started the scoring with 21-yard field goal by George Gonzales. The Red Arrows didn’t stop there as Max Dean scored on a 1-yard run to make it 10-0 Lowell. Ryan Stevens then scored on a 4-yard run to put the Red Arrows up 17-0. Things were starting to look bleak for the Crusaders.
After King received a penalty for Intentional Grounding, Armani Posey hit Donte Boyd on a screen pass that Boyd took 73-yards to the Lowell 2 yard line. Posey then ran a naked bootleg 3-yards for a Crusader touchdown. Anwar Miah connected on the extra point to make the game 17-7. But Lowell didn’t bat an eye as Dean strolled in for a 3-yard score to put them up 24-7. King decided that they weren’t going to lay down in the Championship game as Posey found LaVert Hill on a 12-yard touchdown pass, a missed extra point and the Red Arrows took a 24-13 lead into the locker room at Halftime.
The 3rd Quarter started with more of the same from Lowell as Dean scored his 3rd touchdown on a 4-yard run to put the Red Arrows up 31-13. The Crusaders came back as the future hero of the game Donnie Corley took a pass from Posey 25-yards to narrow the score to 31-20. King showed that they were on the comeback trail after Ambry Thomas and Posey hooked up on a 41-yard touchdown pass to bring the Crusaders closer 31-26. Lowell was prepared to counter as Stevens scored his 2nd touchdown on a 2-yard run to put the Red Arrows up 38-26. This would be the last time King allowed Lowell to see the endzone. King then scored on a 2-yard pass from Posey to Hill, Posey then found Martell Pettaway in the endzone for the 2-point conversion. This made the score 38-34.
The Red Arrows seemed to think they had this game in hand as they made a few first downs. Kings defense stiffened and cause Lowell to punt with 37 seconds to go. Lowell’s punt went out of bounds at the 5-yard line and the Crusaders started their drive.
On the very 1st play, King got a False Start penalty that pushed them back to the 3. Posey connected with Hill for a 22-yard 1st down. Posey then completed another 10-yard strike to Corley. Boyd made a spectacular 25-yard catch that moved the Crusaders to the Red Arrows 40 yard line with 10 seconds remaining. Posey just missed connecting with Thomas with 2 seconds left on the clock. The next play became the ESPN SportsCenter Top Ten’s number 1 play. Posey launched a 40-yard Hail mary pass to Corley to seal the victory 40-38 as time expired on the clock. The King sideline and crowd went nuts as they started to celebrate their Division 2 Football State Championship.
This ending of this game was surely Sports Center’s Top 10 play #1 play as @Al_Hence suggested.
