The weather was perfect for a match up of two top Oakland Athletic Association and neither team nor their student sections disappointed. After a few possessions of feeling each other out, the Lakers forced a turnover and quickly turned that into a touchdown reception by Davion Johnson. The RedHawks got on the board with a field goal by Zach Ayotte, West Bloomfield led 7-3 after the 1st quarter. Troy Athens took their first lead with a TD by Jake Vincent. Mr. Versatile, Trishton Jackson made a spectacular TD catch to give the Lakers a 14-9 lead they would take into the half. The 3rd quarter was dominated by the defense on both sides, the play of West Bloomfield’s DL Theo Majette stood out, as he seemed to stay in the backfield of the RedHawks. The Lakers offense finally started clicking and the Winn brothers (Garrett and Gervon) helped to extend the lead; a late Athens TD concluded the scoring in the game as the Lakers outlasted the RedHawks 28-17.
Both of these teams look like they will be around for a deep post-season run come late October. West Bloomfield hosts Lake Orion next week and Troy Athens hosts Bloomfield; both games are on Friday September 25th starting at 7:00 pm.
